G9983 15" Open-End Wide-Belt Sander -19-
Before Starting
SECTION 6: OPERATIONS
NOTICE
The following section was designed to give
instructions on the basic operations of this
wide-belt sander. However, it is in no way
comprehensive of every wide-belt sander
application. WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND
that you read books, trade magazines, or
get formal training to maximize the potential
of your wide-belt sander.
Keep loose clothing out
of the way of machinery
and keep hair pulled
back during operations.
Wear safety glasses dur-
ing the entire operation
process. Failure to com-
ply may result in serious
personal injury.
Disconnect power to the
machine when perform-
ing any maintenance or
adjustments. Failure to
do this may result in seri-
ous personal injury.
Always wear a dust mask
in addition to using a
dust collector. Dust
masks filter out the
smaller particles of dust
that dust collectors can-
not trap.
Before beginning any work with your machine,
make sure you have read through this entire
manual. Your safety while running this machine
absolutely depends on your familiarity and com-
pliance with the information in this manual.
Choosing Sandpaper
The Model G9983 takes 16"W x 48"L sanding
belts.
The grit you choose will depend on the type of
work, the species of wood and the stage of fin-
ishing. Below is a chart that groups abrasives into
different classes and shows which grits fall into
each class. We recommend using aluminum
oxide for best results.
The general rule of thumb is to sand a workpiece
with progressively higher grit numbers, with no
one grit increase of more than 50.
Ultimately, the type of wood you use and your
stage of finish will determine the best grit types to
install on your sander.
